in the interpretation of the wishes

of State in making the Secretary of State simply Head Master, and depriving:

the higher office of Inspector of Schools? Since the

1st of July, 1865,

"the sole supervision of the Education Department in this Colony." has been

by virtue of Notification No. 97 in

the Government Gazette

of the 24th June

of that year. The

placing of me, therefore, simply

in the position of Head Master

of Central School, and this, of necessity,

in subordination to the higher officer,

is a supersession of

me as Head of the Education Department. This, after

17 years of,

I believe, approved service; during 14 of which I have been the

Head

of the Department, induces me

to think that there may be some mis-

apprehension as to the wishes of Her

Majesty's Secretary of State in reducing

the Service.

221

I beg, therefore, to request for this matter your further consideration, with the view of ascertaining whether

I am henceforth really to occupy the subordinate position implied in your

letter

now under consideration.

I have

(Signed) Frederick Stewart.
