I am to enquire
what steps
Stanhope
now
proposes
to take in regard to
the anticipated
excess on
the sum of £116,000, which the
Colonial Legislature agreed
to contribute for
works.
3. His Lordship can
only repeat what has been stated in previous Correspondence, that in his
opinion a portion of such
excess ought to fall
on the Colonial
Government, especially if the supposition referred to in
the paragraph of the letter
from this Department of
25 Feb. 1888 be correct,
viz. that a sum between
£3000 & £4,000 spent
on the batteries erected
in 1885 has been charged against
the above-mentioned
£116,000; a sum which was voted
not for that purpose
but for the same object
of continuing fortification, which has nearly
been recently completed.
His Lordship would be glad to learn whether
