2. of which I enclose, recommended. the establishment of a Volunteer Corps, portion of which should be mounted, in addition to the artillery Volunteer Corp. already existing.
The suggestion was considered in Executive Council, and a Committee of leading Members of the Community was appointed to consider the question.
3. The Committee reported in due course, and I append a Copy of their Report, from which Your Lordship will observe that the Committee recommended that the dismounted portion of the proposed Corps, should be a Machine Gun Corps. armed with the Maxim Gun.
4. The matter then remained in abeyance for some months during the absence of General Edwards on leave to Australia, and on the 19th of October the Committee sent a further report stating that, as the result of a very close canvass, 22 persons had volunteered for the mounted portion of the Corps, and 88 for the Machine Gun Corps.
