be attached to it. Since Mr Bowdler has ceased to perform the duties of Assistant Surveyor General, they have been taken by Mr. Cooper, whose permanent office is that of Inspector of Buildings.
It is, however, proposed that Mr. Cooper should be transferred to the Water Supply and Drainage Works under the charge of Mr. Chadwick, as stated in paragraph 44 of Your Lordship's Despatch of the 28th December.
Mr Chadwick has frequently impressed upon me of late the necessity of his having the benefit of Mr. Cooper's services at the earliest possible date, but Mr. Brown informs me that until some one is attached to his Department to perform Mr Cooper's work it is impossible to spare him.
Your Lordship will therefore understand the desirability of such an appointment being made as will permit Mr Cooper's transfer of his services to Mr Chadwick, but in making any appointment of an Assistant Surveyor General the position in which Mr Bowdler stands, and to which I have above alluded, must be considered.
