The present incumbent, Mr Robert Chapman, was engaged by the Crown Agent in England and arrived here in January 1889.

Under his agreement (vide Governor's despatch No 314 of the 18th of November 1888) his salary is at present Fifty five ($55) dollars a month with quarters, uniform, and he will be entitled next year to a further increase of Five ($5) dollars per month.

The duties and responsibilities of the Office have, I am given to understand, considerably increased since Mr W. Chapman's appointment. The number of patients treated in the hospital has been steadily becoming larger, so much so that an extension of the accommodation is under contemplation.

For this reason it has been found necessary to employ an increased number of native nurses, those provided for in the Estimates for the Smallpox Hospital being temporarily employed in the Civil Hospital; in the absence of smallpox cases.
