William Charles H. Hastings arrived in the Colony on the 15th instant, and entered upon his duties as Assistant Harbour Master. He is to receive the salary formerly received by the Assistant Harbour Master for Collecting Light Dues, and partly in lieu of fees for the examination of Masters and mates in the Mercantile Marine.
The salary provided in the Estimates for the Assistant Harbour Master is $1920 per annum. But Captain Hastings having been appointed on a salary of $2640, the increase is due partly to the amalgamation of the salary formerly received by the Assistant Harbour Master for Collecting Light Dues.
As explained in Your Lordship's despatch No. 144 of 14th September, 1888, it was necessary to take a vote for an increase of $720 per annum.
