signified; Phineas Ryrie, Esquire, on expiration of the period of six years for which his former seat was retained, to be Member of the Legislative Council of this Colony.
Mr Ryrie has been a pleasure, QV Ho Kai, Barrister-at-law, Member of the Legislative Council for the last twenty-three years and has expressed his wish to still retain his seat on it.
The period of six years for which Mr Wong Thing, a Member of the Chinese Community, held his seat having likewise expired, that gentleman begged that he might be permitted, owing to failing health, to decline re-appointment.
I have accordingly appointed provisionally and subject to Her Majesty's approval, a gentleman of considerable education who spent years of study in England, and who is the representative of perhaps the oldest and most respected family in Hongkong, to occupy the Chinese official seat on the Legislative Council thus vacated.
3. I have the honour to submit and recommend the above provisional appointments for Her Majesty's approval.
