It has been found necessary to make a small addition to the emoluments of the office in order to obtain the services of a suitable person to fill the vacancy, on account of the increased responsibilities of the Compradore's office, having now to find security for the whole of the Chinese staff. This rule was made in 1887, and although Mr Isün, who had some private means, did not ask for an increase on that account, it naturally renders the post more difficult to fill than formerly.
