RE How Lord Knutsford. Sec. of S.

My Lord,

I have the honor to reply to your Lordship's letter of

Oct = 8th and to regret extremely that I am not prepared to return to my office at the end of my present leave, family matters would entirely preclude my being able to return to the Colony

as early as the expiration of my present leave. I would like to bring respectfully to your Lordship's

notice that under

my

service

of leave authorized by regulations in respect to

7 years

almost is 1 year & 6 mos of which I have only at present 8 months granted and that my period of service in the Colony of Hong-Kong comprised the whole charges & execution under the Surveyor-General of the important Tythan Waterworks the work entailed on me

being of a very arduous & trying nature for which I received what I venture to think the quite inadequate salary of $300 per month or equal to about £600 per annum in the Colony. I would therefore be very grateful if your Lordship could see fit to grant me my half-pay for the remaining period of 10 months- I have only to add that I place myself at your Lordship's disposal if

at any

I have the honor to be,

Your Lordship's most obedient servant

James Orange
