Sir,
H. M. S. •Victor Emanuel', 1
Hongkong, 19th. July, 1889.
I have the honour to reply to Your Excellency's
acknowledgement of the receipt of my resignation as a
member of the Colonial Defence Committee, which was made
in obedience to instructions from my Commander-in-Chief,
to whom I shall forward your letter.
2. For my own part I express my regret at be-
ing unable to retain my seat on the Committee but I do
not think it would have been compatible with my position
to have remained a member of it, seeing that the War
Office Regulations do not admit of my entering any fort,
and for that reason I do not feel qualified to co-operate-
I have &c.
(Signed) Edud. J. Church,
Commodore.
