With a view of strengthening the department I recommend that the calaries of the Assistant Survey or General, and the Sanitary Enquieer be ncreased, and that these Officers, and the Executive Enquieer, be placed on an equal footing as regards pay and official status. By this the Government would have three officials from whom to choose for the performance of the duties of the Surveyor General in the event of

event of illness absence on leave, or retirement from

the service.
