On the 26th ult; I received a requisition from

His Excellency the Governor of Hongkong, to cause a

Gunboat to be anchored off the Harbour Master's Office,

with a view to protecting the Government property, &

shipping, against a threatened disturbance & attack

}

by the Cargo Coolies, who were then on strike. I

accordingly had the "Espoir" anchored off the Harbour

Office, & sent to her, from the "Audacious", a detachmt:

of Marines, consisting of one Officer & 50 Men, to be

landed, in case of necessity only, to protect life &

property. They returned to their proper ship the same

night, without occasion arising for their being landed,

& on the Ist inst:, the Governor acquainted me that the

strike was over, & the services of the Gunboat no longer

required.
