As for the "Extraordinary" works affected from the original Estimates required for completion, about $1,000,000 is a reasonable margin, but many of what are called "Extraordinary" public works would in other Colonies be called "ordinary" and not directly reproductive.
It appears that they call "Extraordinary" intended to be paid for out of balances and the proceeds of a loan. But as the balances are low and the proceeds of the recent loan are nearly exhausted with the charge for interest on it, they will have to raise a great deal more. Examples include $577,000 for Police Building, $178,000 for Lighthouse, and $177,000 for Military works, totalling $1,294,000, as much as the town already raised.
The finance will therefore require the careful and earnest consideration of the Governor, and I think we may say sparingly so far. By way of his department, I note that the Estimate for the new Central Market has already been spent at 50%.
