9th day of 10 moon (4 November) 1886. when she came I went to the hall to sleep. My wife did not come on this occasion. I was expecting her in a few days. On the morning of the 12th (9 November) I slept in the outer house. I slept alone in the outer place. My brother and my sister-in-law slept in their own room. There were an old female servant and a girl. The servant slept under the porch of front door, the 2 women slept in the servants' quarters that night. On that night some robbers came to our house.
I woke up after going to sleep when I heard a great noise outside in the street as if people were forcing the street door open. I got up and went through the passage to my brother's room to wake him. When I reached the door of the passage to the inner open space, I found it locked on the inner side. I heard knocking at the outer wall of the house near my mother's room - the wall dividing the house from the next. I knocked at my brother's room door as well as the passage door. No one came to open it. I called out. I heard some men coming through the wall referred to. I heard the noise of hammers hammering at the wall. I heard the sound of bricks falling and a number of men come in. Then I heard my brother call out "save life" several times. I also heard the reports of firearms after hearing...
