I have the honour to acknowledge

receipt of your despatch C.S.O. no 1409 and, in reply to

state that the Company

do not require Mr Brewer's services as

the Company will have a permanent Resident Engineer.

Mr Brewer will only be required to make periodical inspections,

say fortnightly, of the Engines, Carriages, and line,

so that the Manager shall be satisfied that everything is working properly.

The Company propose to offer

remuneration to Mr Brewer for his services $40 per month.

I imagine

The Honourable J. Stewart, LL.D.

Acting Colonial Secretary,

Hongkong.
