Sir,
In consequence of the expiration of the term of service or early departure of Mr. Lidstone, Clerk of Works in this Department, I was about to address you requesting that the Crown Agent be written to for another Clerk of Works to succeed Mr. Lidstone on the same terms as the latter, but Mr. Bowdler, the Assistant Surveyor General, having represented to me that it would be far preferable to engage two Overseers of Buildings at reduced pay and to promote these men to the Office of Clerk of Works, if certain conditions are met.
