At a meeting held on the 22nd November, 1886, the Sub-Committee of the Sanitary Board specially appointed to consider the whole question of the market requirements of the Western District of the City, a Resolution was passed recommending (for reasons set forth in the minutes of proceedings) that the four existing Markets, viz: - Tai Ping Shan, Western, Shek Tong Tsui, and Sai Ying Pun be amalgamated into one general new market for the Western district. It was further resolved to recommend that the proposed new market should be built on a site to be reclaimed from the Sea opposite the Sailors' Home, and that the new accommodation to be provided should be based on the actual stall space occupied in the four present markets.
