22. I desire also to point out that in relinquishing private practice I should be able to effect a saving to Government, by undertaking, free of cost to the Public, the duties in his absence at the cholera Quarantine or on leave from illness.
23. As regards that portion of my application which relates to allowance and the privileged leave allowance, I submit that I am compelled, by order and by the nature of my duties, to live in the Central district of the City of Victoria; as to be expensive. For a residence with barely adequate accommodation and healthy surroundings, I am compelled to pay a monthly rent of £18. A healthy residence, however expensive, is necessary to me in consequence of being debarred the privilege and advantage enjoyed by other Heads of Government Departments of living at Victoria Peak during the trying summer months in the sanitariums supplied by Government. Nor am I able to take vacations or leave at frequent intervals as is done by other members of the service.
