The report and extent of the work done by the Medical Department have grown in proportion to the arrangements that might have been deemed expedient in 1873 when I first took up my present post, and can no longer be justified under the altered circumstances of 1887.
For these reasons, I am confident that the propositions contained in paragraph 44 of this letter will commend themselves to the favourable consideration of the Government, as being conducive not less to public interests than to justice to myself.
17. My emoluments, as I have already stated, are a salary of £820, a chair allowance of £60, and the privilege of private practice equivalent to at least another £1000. But if the whole of my time and attention are required for the due execution of my official duties to the exclusion of private practice, it follows that I cannot derive those emoluments I was led to expect, and that I must relinquish either my private or my official professional pursuits.
18. Having, as I have reason to believe, earned the confidence of the Colonial Government during the thirteen years I have been fulfilling my present functions, I repeat that I desire to retire from the Public Service, and therefore I beg very respectfully to make this application, trusting that the Officers administering the Government will be pleased to recommend it on its own merits to the approval of Her Majesty's Secretary of State for the Colonies, who surely would not wish to see me, after thirteen years' service in this Colony, and seven years...
