Under the more efficient sanitary legislation contemplated, there is no doubt that the duties of the new Sanitary Board will be still further increased and it is certain that in the future my attention will require to be directed to this branch of my public duties even more than at present. For this, no extra remuneration has been offered by Government, and the matter is specially serious in that it deprives me of time and opportunity for private practice.
13. Though its details are carried out by the Health Officer, the responsibilities and superintendence of Quarantine devolve on the Colonial Surgeon as the head of the Medical Department of the Colony. During the six months of the summer season there is no more harassing a portion of my functions than that connected with Quarantine and relating to the aggregate tonnage of ships visiting our waters during the year, and to the large and important maritime interests of the Port, it may readily be conjectured that the duties and responsibilities of the Medical Department in this respect are not light.

The preceding paragraphs have touched only on the special attributes of my post, without entering into the details of the general daily business routine and administrative work of the office, involving considerable correspondence and absorbing a great deal of time every year. But I think enough has been said to show that it is no longer consistent with the due and efficient performance of my Government duties, already so much extended, and with the unfettered exercise.
