not thought too high pay for a Colonial Surgeon who would give his whole time to Government, the amount offered to him in 1883 on condition of his giving up private practice viz $4800 or only £1000 a year, than in 1861, is altogether inadequate under the altered circumstances of the Colony, which have more than doubled the official duties which he is required to perform.

Dr. Ayres calls attention to the circumstance that he is compelled by the nature of his duties to reside in a certain part of the town, where rents are very high; and he also states an argument in favour of his demand that he would be able to take over Dr. Marques' duties in addition to his own whenever Dr. Marques is absent on account of ill-health.
