The Colonial Surgeon because
he was allowed private practice. Had he been debarred
from private practice, his salary would have been £800 + £180 =
£980 a year.

Now in 1861, when a Census
was taken, the population of the Colony was found to be
119,321; in 1881 it was
160,400; and it is now estimated to be at the least 190,000 —
