Further, he alleges that the large increase in his official duties has been brought about by his own disinterested efforts for years past in the view of improving the sanitary condition of the Colony, as it was owing to his reports in conjunction with the Surveyor General, Mr. Price, and the constant representations made by them that Mr. Chadwick was sent here to report on the question of the Sanitary condition of Hongkong. The creation of the Sanitary Board has thrown a very large increase of work upon the Colonial Surgeon, whilst the enormous development of the shipping trade has very largely added to his work in the way of Quarantine supervision.
