Report by the Surveyor General.

In pursuance of the instructions of His Excellency the Officer Administering Government, that we should consider and report upon the question raised in Colonial Office Despatch No.78 of the 10th of December 1886 and also in paragraph 33 of the Annual Report of the Superintendent of Victoria Gaol regarding the possibility of providing accommodation outside the present prison for short sentence prisoners, we have the honour to report that in view of the complete absence in the town of any suitable building for this purpose, and the undue expense that would be entailed by the conversion of private houses into a safe place of confinement, not to say nothing of the high rents that would have to be paid for such houses, we are of opinion that a better alternative for securing the additional room required would be to carry out the site above Bonham Road
