prompt steps taken by the Acting Superintendent to put it down, I have the honour to report that the number of offences committed by prisoners for the month of January and February last give the figures of 563 for the former month and 287 for the latter. Deducting from the prison offences of January the 877 cases of mutineers, the number of offences for the two months would be 477 and 287, which I submit shows that the punishment inflicted on the mutineers has had a most salutary effect on the rest of the prisoners.
2. The number of prisoners confined on Monday last was 557. It may be remembered that in June last I reported the number then confined to be 710 :
