Kellett's Bank, this second portion being 1694 yards long. The total length of breakwater would then be 2794 yards.
This would leave a channel between
Stonecutters Island and the breakwater
about 1,700 yards wide
of from 5 to 9 fathoms. In calculating the number
of junks required, the depth of water, nature of the bottom, and the proper depth below the surface of the water of
the top of the obstruction and its thickness must be considered.
I find that there are four sizes of large junks obtainable, and
I had them measured with the result shown in appendix X.
The depth of the water at ordinary low tides varies along the route proposed from 3½ to 5 fathoms.
