of junks required, the depth of water, nature of the bottom, and the proper depth below the surface of the water of

the top of the obstruction and its thickness must be considered.

I find that there are four sizes of large junks obtainable, and

I had them measured with the result shown in appendix X.

The depth of the water at ordinary low tides varies along the route proposed from 3½ to 5 fathoms.
