7. There seems no reason now to anticipate any more disturbance in the Gaol, and attribute this entirely to the fact that the recent outbreak has been put down with so much energy and promptness. Possible, if not probable, bloodshed has been, in my opinion, thereby avoided.

The punishment inflicted on the greater part of the mutineers, 12 strokes of a rattan on the breech, is by no means a severe one and is very light in comparison to what would have been meted out to those men in their own country, and I believe it would have had no appreciable deterrent effect had it been inflicted the next day, instead of following immediately.
