antage from the sale of Crown Lands disposed of at own instance, hav his - refrained from drawing these fees, with the exception of one instance in 1897-8 (likely OCR error, 1896-7 is more plausible given the context), when a sum of $890 was drawn by him for the purpose of being distributed amongst officers of his staff who had undergone much extra fatigue and exposure in the completion of 2 important surveys. During Mr. Price's absence in England, however, these fees were drawn by his locum tenens, Mr. Bowdler, and as the amount drawn by him in 1881 was very high, amounting to $2,056.80, I thought it my duty to call the attention of the Secretary of State to this large addition to the salary of the Surveyor-General. In reply, I was directed that these fees should be discontinued to subsequent holders of that Office.
