Hong Kong and private affairs as well are part of my public life, I protested that I was called upon for such defence (Please refer to correspondence which I had been forwarded to Your Lordship). My defence was that as an executor of an estate duly appointed by law, I was duty bound, in fact swore to administer the estate to the best of my skill and ability. I did so, and in doing so, I most respectfully submit that I did nothing contrary to the laws of the Colony or the rules of the service to which I had the honour to belong.

6. With reference to the concluding section of the above order, viz the severe reprimand recently administered to me for my connexion with the letting of Messrs Markham & Co., I beg to state that His request cannot be granted.
