that; if disturbances should again break out in the Far East, I am ready and desirous to return forthwith to my post at whatever personal risk or inconvenience.

(5.) The Officer administering the Government during my absence (W. Marsh,) has given General satisfaction; and will, of course, be glad to remain in discharge of his present duties for as long a period as may be desired.

(6.) It is believed that there is at least one precedent of a former Governor of Hongkong (Sir R. Macdonnell,) having been granted a longer extension of leave than that for which I now beg to apply.

(7.) I am desirous to return to Hongkong, and to complete my term of office there, if (according to the tenor of the annexed medical certificate,) a somewhat longer residence and further treatment in Europe should render it prudent for me to return to duty in a tropical climate. It is hoped that this may be the case.

Under the circumstances thus repeated, and on considerations which might be submitted, I venture to hope that the indulgence now asked, after 32 years of past service, - that is, an extension for six months of the leave already given (up to December 19th next) - may be granted to me.

I have the honor to be, Your most Obedient Humble Servant,

S. Bowen
