The Botanic Gardens at Hong Kong are very highly and flatteringly mentioned by persons who have visited them and their present high state of efficiency is mainly due to the assiduity and care with which Mr Ford has discharged the duties of Superintendent during the last fifteen years.

In the matter of afforestation Mr Ford has been signally successful and it is deserving of mention that the additional duties devolving upon Mr Ford in connection with this work have been cheerfully and faithfully discharged and that he has received extra pay therefor as is the case in other colonies.

5. Mr Ford by visits and expeditions to the mainland has also contributed to the enlargement of knowledge regarding Chinese plants and the results are incorporated in the "Index Florae Sinensis" published in the Linnean Society's Journal. He was successful in obtaining plants of the true Camellia which have been widely distributed throughout the tropical possessions.
