three cases of murder and one of robbery.
1.
Three witnesses to prove the slaying of one Mo-that on 21 Sep: 1884.
2. One witness to prove the slaying of one O Sum-chap on the 27th of March 1884 & the plunder of his boat.
3. One witness to prove the slaying of Kwan Teck-sing on 17th July 1885.
For the defence, witnesses were called to prove that the prisoner was a salt trader and did not commit the crimes alleged against him.
After hearing the evidence, I could not take upon myself to say that there was not a primâ facie case against the prisoner, and in consequence, I ordered him to be detained pending H.E.'s orders. At the same time, I desire to state that I considered the case against the prisoner a strong one by no means a weak one. Some of the witnesses giving untrustworthy evidence in an unsatisfactory manner, and I should have expected better evidence to have been given by the prosecution, taking into consideration the means available.
