I enclose, however, a copy addressed to Mr Marsh, from which I will perceive, that I informed him that if the Hongkong Government do not think the representations I have lately made to the Tsungli Yamên likely to be sufficient to prevent a repetition of the complaint made in respect of the Sung Wah hospital, I will be ready to bring the matter to the notice of the Chinese Government.

I have the honour to acknowledge the receipt of G.R. despatch marked No139 of 4 January respecting the style employed by the Canton Officials in communicating with the President of the Tung Wah Hospital at Hongkong and the objections to its continuance implying the subordination of this institution to the Chinese Authorities.

From my following despatch you will learn the steps I have taken to secure for the British Colony of Hongkong the respect due from the Chinese local Officials.

To

H.H. Marsh Esq.
