I have written to the Chinese officials in this matter.

In an interview with the Minister, the Pungli yamen strongly deprecated the unwarrantable action of the thenice officials, and said that this was an instance that had lately occurred of British territory being invaded.

I took occasion to remind their Excellencies very positively that Hongkong was British territory.

I expressed my lavish regret that its repetition should occur in future, and that the Macao frontier must be very carefully guarded against.

The Macao officials again expressed their regret for what had occurred, and assured me that the local officials at Jaklers told me instructed to make suitable securities to the Hongkong frontier, and that instructions would be sent to the local authorities as requested.
