had ordered, as an experimental measure that Dr. Marques should assist him in the Civil Hospital, whilst on Wharry, W70 the other hand he, Dr was to undertake all the Medico-Legal work. He was told, at the same time, that "the increase sanctioned by the Secretary of State to Dr Wharry's salary being based on his representation that he had been called upon to perform extra-duties, such as taking charge of the Small-pox Hospital and the medico-legal work, post-mortem, &c.; it is to be clearly understood that he is responsible for these duties, and is not to delegate them to the Assistant, unless in very exceptional cases."

This arrangement would, I believe, have worked well if it had been observed by Dr Wharry, as it relieved him of a great part of the Hospital work but he reported on 17th May, 1883, that Dr. Wharry did not perform any of the medico-legal work.
