At the request of the Earl of Kimberley I reported on this application of Dr Wharry on 8th January and again on 25th September 1882.

On the 24th January 1883, Lord Derby, in reply to this last despatch stated that "I am of opinion that Dr Wharry had not advanced strong grounds in support of his application, but, on the condition of his taking sole charge of the Civil Hospital, though the increase of accommodation may lead to a larger number of patients," he sanctioned an increase of pay.

In the same despatch it was left to Sir G. Bowen on his arrival to make the necessary arrangements about the employment of Dr Marques.
