The external appearance of the building and not the internal arrangement decided the situation of the latrines, two being at the east end, and one on the north side. The prevailing winds are from the East and North East during the greater part of the year, so more or less latrine air necessarily finds its way into the wards.
Instead of the water closet being entirely enclosed and separately ventilated, there is nothing but a wooden screen between them and the baths and wash-hand basins, and patients washing themselves have to put up with the disgusting smell proceeding from the water closet close to them.
Most of the latrine doors are without latches...
