"the transfer of the Small-Pox Hospital to Dr. Marques would relieve him" to a certain extent, and I have directed that Dr. Marques should take over here these duties as soon as he has recovered from the illness from which he is at present suffering. I beg to call attention to Dr. Wharry's report on this subject, from which it will be seen that Dr. Wharry was in charge of the Small Pox Hospital and all the medico-legal work; and now that he has obtained an increase of pay on that ground, and has moreover been almost wholly relieved of the medico-legal work, he avers that "no impartial medical observer would hesitate to say that the Civil Hospital requires at least two Medical Officers".
In 1884 Dr. Wharry asked for an increase of pay on the ground that he had been imposed with extra duties. And "that these two should be relieved of all administrative work, confining their attention to the medical duties alone".
