I beg especially to refer to my Despatch No 140 of 3rd May last and to the comparative statement there enclosed showing the pay and emoluments of the European Police Force at the Straits Settlements. A copy is annexed (Enclosure) for reference. It will be seen that the Police at Singapore have to remit at the current rates of Exchange and therefore if the proposed concession is made here it will inevitably be claimed also in that Colony.
