reasonable share of such extra expense should be borne by "the Imperial Exchequer!"

In my opinion the finances of the Colony do not permit of this work being undertaken at present,

if half of the cost were to be borne by the Imperial Government in accordance with the views expressed by Lord Derby on 14th January 1884, in a communication to the War Office.

There are also other works more urgently required. I shall, however, take advantage of the favourable disposition entertained by General Cameron towards this scheme, and endeavour to have plans and all preliminaries settled, whilst he is in command of the Troops at this station.
