It appears that he was first taken to Chinchow in the Swatow district, and then brought back to Howloong in the jurisdiction of the Viceroy of the Two Kiang, where he was beheaded. His body was given up to his relatives two days ago, by whom it was identified in the presence of a Police Magistrate. Whether the man was arrested by persons sent specially for that purpose, or whether he was accidentally met by the Chinese soldiers who wanted to secure the reward of $200, does not yet appear, but enquiries are being made, the result of which I will not fail to communicate to you as well as to Her Majesty's Minister at Peking.
I need scarcely remind you that this is the second time this year that an arrest has been made within the jurisdiction of the Colony by Chinese Officials. The effect of this contemptuous disregard of international law will be very bad.
