view of carrying out the recommendation in paragraph 29 of General Gordon's report, viz., that long sentence prisoners only should be confined in Victoria Gaol and that the other prisoners should be removed to some other building.
2. I regret to say that it has been found impossible to carry out this recommendation, as no suitable building could be found. Had the finances of the Colony permitted, I would have proposed to build one of the wings of the new Gaol, the approved plans of which were made some years ago. The Gaol might then have been relieved, and the prisoners detained in the new building might have been usefully employed in preparing stone for the construction of other wings.
