The Colonial Surgeon has, on several occasions in his Annual Reports, called attention to the high rate of sickness amongst Gaol guards and European subordinate employés, who are compelled by their low salaries to dwell in Chinese houses, with less ventilation than would be provided in the temperate climate of England.

Ordinance. Difficulty has been experienced in defining what is meant by Chinese Houses, as European Houses have been converted into Chinese dwellings by taking out all the interior separating walls.
