giving a fairly accurate report of the proceedings in the Legislative Council on 27th instant.
A motion was made on that occasion, after due notice, by the Honourable Mr. Ewen, one of the new Members who took his seat for the first time, the practical effect of which motion would have been the abolition of the Finance Committee.
This motion was lost after a lengthy debate, all the Official Members voting against it and all the Unofficial Members voting for it, except one who voted for an amendment.
It will be seen from the papers which I laid before the Council that, at a meeting of the Finance Committee held on 15th July last, during the recess, Mr. McEwen moved and carried a resolution that the Finance Committee should suspend all action until the question decided by the Legislative Council whether its meetings should not be held with open doors, the object being to admit reporters.
