The Committee appointed to inquire into bribery in the Police Force of this Colony in connection with Gambling, stated that they felt $10. convinced that the Chinese Constables are corrupted to a considerable extent, although positive proof, except in rare cases, is wanting.

The opinion of the Committee above expressed, has just received the strongest confirmation. A proprietor of a gambling place, tired, it would appear, of the continued exactions of the Chinese Police Constables, gave information to Major Dempster, who is in command of the Force, during the absence on vacation leave of Captain Deane. An Inspector accompanied by a Chinese Interpreter were, in consequence of this information, concealed before daybreak about ten days in a house in the Chinese quarter of Victoria, in such a position that they could observe all that was going on.
