copy of these Regulations, which were made by the Governor in Council on 18th November last, and put in force immediately afterwards. I have added to these regulations the one which I transmitted for Your Lordship's approval by my despatch W:221 of 26th ultimo, which confers on the Superintendent of the Gaol the power of awarding corporal punishment in certain cases.
This rule it is proposed to introduce between the printed rules 260 and 261. The reductions in diet which have been recommended by the Committee recently appointed to enquire into the state of the Gaol are shown in red ink in the copy of Government Notification No.235 of 14 June last. It will be observed that the quantities of food and Fresh Fish now given are to be considerably reduced, as they are in excess.
The proposed diet is of the fare generally used by free coolies, and
