Enclosure 3.

26th June, 1886.

No A shang, a coolie who, according to the evidence of Constables Myers and Daniel, has been squeezing the coolies at the Aberdeen Dock, was ordered this forenoon at the Police Court to find personal security of $100 to be of good behaviour for twelve months. It was said that ever since the Chinese New Year he has been stationed near the dock gate and that every coolie as he passes after receiving his daily wage had to deposit 4 cents in a box held out by accused, if he wished to escape a mangling from the rogue's friends,-members, it is alleged, of the Triad Society. On the other hand, accused's friends said he was the agent of one Afat, who used to be a foreman at the Docks and now kept the Tang Wo coolie house. The money was used, they said, for the founding of a sort of a sick and mutual aid fund. Whatever truth there may be in this story, the prisoner's conduct was such as to merit his being classed as a rogue and vagabond and bound over as stated to keep the peace.
