I have the honour to forward a letter I received from Dr Marques on the 4th instant, with an account of things that have since come to my knowledge, and of which I think the Government ought to be informed, that the Superintendent had gone up to the Peak. It has been always the custom for him in former years, before doing so, to forward an official note informing me of his intentions and the arrangements provided for carrying on duties at night during his absence.
Dr Marques said he had not been requested to take charge and supposed Superintendent had arranged with me, as the Superintendent had told her that when he, Dr Marques, took charge, it was doing the Government a favour, not doing it for himself;
