Wharry, especially at this time of the year, could not perform, or attempt to perform Dr Ayres' duties in addition to his own.
They therefore advised that Dr Ayres' arrangements be accepted, and that Dr Jordan should be appointed Acting Colonial Surgeon.
4. In dealing with this matter I had at the same time to take into consideration the fact that Dr Wharry has, for some years past, continually represented that the duties imposed on him are too heavy for one man to perform.
Formerly he had sole charge of the Hospital and had, in addition, all the medico-legal work. In reply to some representations made by him about his salary and work, the Secretary of State on the 25th January 1883, sanctioned a personal allowance, in addition to his salary, of $840 per annum, conditional "upon his taking sole charge of the Civil Hospital, even though the increase of accommodation may lead to a larger number of patients."
