I have the honour to invite the attention of Government to the present system of inspecting all markets and live stock, and to offer certain suggestions with a view to their improvement.
From the accompanying return it will be seen that in the City of Victoria and the outlying villages there are altogether 6 Markets with a total number of 770 stalls, shops, and stalls. The charge of these markets is at present entrusted to one Inspector of Markets, who is supposed to exercise a general supervision over them, and to constables, who reside in the markets, and who are presumed to attend to their general good order and cleanliness aided by a staff of constables and scavengers.
